Abstract Art Lesson (VPK-6th grade)

You can still create your abstract Art from home! Some of you learned about Mr. Kandinsky the great Abstract Artist who explored LINE, SHAPE, COLOR, and PATTERNS in his art.

Click the video to learn all about Mr. Wassily Kandinsky.

Questions: Can you describe what you see? What emotion do you think the artist was trying to show?

Materials: Any paper, anything to write with, & anything to color with

Step 1: Draw different types of lines across your paper (Zig-zag, wavy, straight, bumpy, curved..) *Make it your own;)

Step 2: Find things around your home that you can trace to create Shapes........  (caps & cookie cutters work great;)

Step 3: Add patterns to your art. Inside of the shapes or in your background. Add details!:)

Step 4: You can add color using crayons, colored pencils, paint, markers or you can have a black and white artwork if you do not have colors available. Try to work on your neatness/craftsmanship and don't forget to have fun!

Self Assessment:

Did you use more than one Element of Art ? (Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Form, Value, Space)

Is your artwork unique and original? How so?

How is your artwork similar to Mr. Kandinsky's artwork?

What emotion does your artwork show?

How to show Depth or Distance/Space in your artwork with 1-point perspective:

Roller Coaster Paper Plate Art Lesson

https://www.amazingmess.com/roller-coaster-paper-plate-toilet-paper-roll-project/

Lets re-use/recycle those Toilet paper rolls! ;)

Materials:

  • Paper plates, scissors, cardboard for a base, tape, paper towel rolls, tp rolls, small ball or marble.
  • Objective: How can Art be functional?
  • Vocab: 3D Form, Sculpture, Functional.
  • Step 1: Use problem solving strategies to brainstorm ways to create a 3D functional sculpture. You can try to draw out your idea first on paper. Goal: to create a mini functional version of a rollercoaster for a small ball. Think Scientifically: How will gravity affect your design? How can you change your design to slow down the ball or speed it up? How can you create a sturdy sculpture? How can you reinforce it?
  • Step 2: Gather materials and start building! This will require a lot of trial and error- learning from your mistakes. Start taping your rolls to the base to create height. Keep in mind you will need a start and end point.
  • Step 3: Test it!
  • Step 4: Re-evaluate and adjust parts of your sculpture to make sure it is functional. Try challenging yourself further by adding twists and loops.
  • Self Assess: What were the challenges you faced? How did you overcome them? Is your art sculpture functional? In what other ways can art be functional?
